Last Night in Noir

(Sep 18 2008)

Synopsis:

With a dark style reminiscent of classic era noirs, Last Night In Noir explores the suffocating smoke, strong shadows and striking settings of the genre by incorporating its trademark iconography, voice-over narration, cynical tone and expressionistic cinematography.

I've always been a fan of film noir, and this brief tribute to the style was more than just an exercise in genre-appropriation - it was legitimate binge into the seedy underworld of no-budget filmmaking.

Notes:
  • Shot entirely on location in downtown Calgary (near Eau Claire Market) in one night, with no planning other than a rough monologue. The ad-lib filming was exciting, to say the least, and ultimately more rewarding than I would have expected.
  • True guerilla filmmaking; shot in order to be submitted to an online filmmaking competition, for which it received the highest rating and most votes, but narrowly failed to win the $5,000 because of a technicality in how scores were aggregated.
